Vazhaikai Podimas!!

A Closer look…

Ingredients:

2 Raw bananas/Vazhaikai
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal
1 green chilly chopped
Small piece of chopped ginger
3-4 tbsp Grated coconut
Some curry leaves
pinch asafoetida
1 tbsp lime juice (optional)
1 tbsp oil
Salt to taste.

Method:

1. Boil the raw bananas in water for about 10  mins or pressure cook them for just one whistle.

2. Put the boiled banana in cold water and let them cool for a while.

3. Once they cool down, remove the skin and grate them.

4. Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds, asafoetida, urad dal and curry leaves.

5. Once the urad dal turns light brown, add the grated raw banana, salt , green chillies ,ginger and saute them for a while.

6. Once the raw banana is nicely cooked add the grated coconut and saute for 2 mins.

7. Add a spoon of lime juice and stir well to spread the lemon flavor evenly.

8. Now take it off the flame and transfer it to a serving bowl.

* Don not over cook the raw banana. Otherwise we can not grate it and it will become mushy.

* Lemon juice is optional. If you do not like the lemon flavor u can just drop it.

This vazhaikai podimas is the authentic south indian side dish for sambar sadam. This can be found as the sure member of any elite authentic south indian meals 😉
